Crypto payments in UK gambling. It's coming? The question is whether operators will be ready.

The UKGC has quietly opened an early-stage review into allowing crypto payments for licensed operators — and the implications stretch well beyond payment rails.

Right now, crypto is exclusively a black market feature in UK gambling. That's one of the unlicensed market's sharpest competitive advantages. The UKGC knows it.

UKGC Executive Director Tim Miller has confirmed the Commission's Industry Forum is actively considering how cryptoassets could fund legal gambling within existing licensing requirements. The UK's broader Cryptoassets Regulations will bring crypto under FCA authority from October 2027 — so the regulatory runway is already set.

The compliance challenge is not trivial.

Operators who move into crypto payments won't just be adding a new deposit method. They'll be navigating:

→ Dual regulatory exposure — satisfying UKGC AML requirements and FCA cryptoasset regulations simultaneously → A fundamentally different monitoring environment — blockchain analytics, wallet provenance tracing, and mixing/tumbling detection are specialist capabilities most gambling compliance teams don't currently have → Source of funds complexity — crypto deposit verification introduces challenges that most gambling AML programmes simply aren't built for yet

The strategic logic is sound. Bringing crypto into the regulated market directly undermines one of the black market's key advantages. But operators who wait for formal guidance before building compliance infrastructure will be starting from behind.

For AML and compliance leaders, the signal is clear: crypto-compatible compliance is no longer a theoretical future requirement. It's a near-term strategic one.
